Looking is not the same as paying attention.

SOMAREALITY’s SOMA Aware turns the gaze and pupil data recorded by Tobii glasses into objective measures of cognitive load, conscious perception and attention. No EEG cap and no extra sensor on the participant.

Supplied and supported in the Middle East by Consort XPR, together with the Tobii wearables it runs on.

01 · What it measures

Measures of the mind, from the eyes alone.

SOMA Aware reads fixation duration, saccadic patterns, pupil dynamics and visual search, and links them to mental effort, perception and attention. SOMAREALITY combines rule-based models with machine learning, so each score can be explained rather than taken on trust.

Cognitive Load

Available

How much mental effort a task demands, measured continuously from pupillometry. The pupil responds to light as well as to effort, so SOMAREALITY separates the cognitive signal from changes in ambient brightness and screen luminance. SOMAREALITY says no other approach on the market makes that correction.

Based onPupil dynamics, brightness-corrected
OutputContinuous load score over time
Use it forWorkload in cockpits, cabins, control rooms and interfaces

Conscious Perception Index

Available

Whether looking is actually perceiving. CPI separates inward-focused thought, when someone stares without taking anything in, from active engagement with the world outside, and grades how intense that engagement is. It turns a traditional heat map into a conscious-perception heat map.

Based onGaze patterns and engagement
OutputInternal vs external focus, engagement intensity
Use it forDid the pilot, driver or shopper register what they saw?

Attention Type Classifier

Available

How attention behaves when it oscillates. ATC evaluates fixation stability, gaze distribution and saccadic movement to tell sustained attention on one area from attention switching across the scene, and flags overload and idle states.

Based onFixations, gaze spread, saccades
OutputSustained, selective, switched, overload, idle
Use it forScanning behaviour, vigilance and task switching

Cognitive Fatigue

Coming soon

A continuous score of mental depletion over a session, capturing subtle changes in mental endurance and giving context to performance that drops off over long shifts, simulator blocks or training days.

StatusExpected in the coming months
OutputContinuous fatigue score
Use it forShift length, training design, safety-critical work

Also announced: Cognitive Performance. A composite index combining cognitive load, familiarity, resilience, precision, efficiency and response speed into one performance score. SOMAREALITY lists it as in development.

02 · How it works

Calibrate, record with Tobii, then analyse.

SOMAREALITY does not make eye trackers, and SOMA Aware is not a live monitor. It processes the recordings your Tobii glasses make, after the session.

Step 1

Calibrate a baseline

A guided baseline of under two minutes per participant, so each score reflects that person rather than an average.

Step 2

Record with Tobii glasses

Run the session as normal with Tobii Pro Glasses 3 or Tobii Glasses X. SOMA Aware needs the scene video and the gaze data file.

Step 3

Upload and analyse

Upload the recording to the SOMA Aware dashboard and process the session. Results show load, perception and attention over time, ready to export.

03 · Where it is used

Wherever effort matters as much as attention.

Aviation

Pilot and crew training

Competency-based training backed by objective workload data. SOMAREALITY lists Lufthansa Aviation Training and Pilatus among its references.

Seven eye-tracking metrics for pilot training →

Healthcare

Surgery and medical training

Cognitive load during surgery and emergency training, with the Medical University of Vienna as a named research partner.

Automotive and industry

Drivers and operators

HMI evaluation, driver studies and heavy-machinery operation, where overload costs more than time.

UX and product

Interfaces that ask too much

Find the screen, step or control where effort spikes, before customers find it for you.

Our own application

Adopting new tools, including AI

Measure the effort a new system adds, before and after rollout, so adoption is judged on evidence rather than opinion.

04 · Questions

Before you specify.

Do I need new hardware?

Not if you already own Tobii Pro Glasses 3, Glasses X or Pro Glasses 2. SOMA Aware processes their recordings. SOMAREALITY lists support for Tobii screen-based eye trackers as coming soon.

Does it give results live?

No. SOMA Aware is a post-session tool: you calibrate, record with your Tobii glasses, then upload the recording and process it in the dashboard.

Which measures can I use today?

Cognitive Load, the Conscious Perception Index and the Attention Type Classifier. Cognitive Fatigue is expected in the coming months, and a composite Cognitive Performance index is in development.

How is SOMA Aware licensed?

Monthly, annual or perpetual licences, per algorithm or as a bundle. We will help you choose the measures your study actually needs.

How have the measures been validated?

SOMAREALITY says its algorithms build on more than 15 years of in-house cognitive science and vision research, tested for sensitivity and reproducibility and cross-checked against EEG-based paradigms. Whitepapers for each algorithm are available from SOMAREALITY.
