A solution to hold a participant’s head in place when conducting eye tracking experiments with screen-based eye trackers; Tobii Pro Spectrum and Pro Fusion.
Tobii Pro eye trackers are designed to capture high-quality eye tracking data while allowing for natural head movements. However, some experiments may benefit from gently stabilizing the participant’s head position by using a chin rest to help reduce artifacts in the gaze signal which can be caused by head movements. An example of such research would be micro-saccade studies.
A chin rest is useful in research where you want to present the stimuli at exact positions on the retina of the participant. For example, by using a chin rest in anti-saccade experiments, the distance from the participant to the screen is controlled. This removes a variable and assists in calculating the positions of stimuli on the monitor. Reading research is another application where a chin rest may be used to ensure certain angular span of letters across participants or within recordings.
The chin rest is designed to be fully adjustable for comfort. It can easily be attached to a table. The forehead and chin rest as well as the chin cup are adjustable to fit each participant and make the position more comfortable, while holding the head in place during the entire experiment. All the components can be easily sanitized in between sessions by using alcohol wipes.
